Chief Roberto L. Fulgueira

 

Chief Roberto L. Fulgueira was born in Havana, Cuba in 1959. He migrated to the United States in 1965. Chief Fulgueira attended school here in Miami and graduated from Miami Senior High in 1977. He attended the Miami Dade College North Campus in 1977 and majored in Criminal Justice. Also attended the University of Louisville, Kentucky and majored in police administration.

 Chief Fulgueira started with the City of Sweetwater Police Department in 1980 as an auxiliary officer. He then attended Miami Dade College and Broward Community College in which he graduated from the Police Academy in 1981. At that time he became a full time City of Sweetwater Police Officer.

 In Chief Fulgueira's career he held the following ranks; Corporal, Sergeant, Detective, Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Assistant Chief and in January of 2005 Mayor Manuel Maroņo promoted him to Chief of Police.

 During Chief Fulgueira's extensive career he has completed various training assignments, such as SWAT Team Member, SWAT Team Sniper, Sniper Training Instructor, Dignitary Protection Unit, Bomb Incident Management Seminar Snipercraft, Terrorism Training Summit, Hazardous Biological and Chemical Agent Training. Special Weapons and Tactics Training.

 Chief Fulgueira has had many special recognitions but among them were the following; Recognized for excellent Patriotism for the Guidance and assistance he and his department provided to the “9/11” Disaster in New York City, NY. Also in 2005 He was appointed by Commissioner ‘Pepe” Diaz to strategically and safely transport urgently needed supplies and provide police assistance during Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi and Louisiana. He has also attended several campaigns in Santo Domingo, Nicaragua and other South American Countries.

 Chief Fulgueira has accomplished a seamless transition of his department going from 47 officers to 130 officers. In addition, the City of Sweetwater has annexed a large portion of commercial and residential area, which includes Dolphin Mall. This resulted in a reduction in crime statistics to Dolphin Mall.

 The City of Sweetwater Police Department, under his command, has had the lowest crime rate in the county and the fastest police response time.  After expanding the police department and annexing a new large area, including Dolphin Mall, the Sweetwater Police Department has been able to maintain their response time within two(2) minutes and reduce crime in the new area by 78%.

 Chief Roberto L. Fulgueira proudly continues to maintain the Citizens of the City of Sweetwater safe and informed for a better and more progressive community.
